Maria began her professional career as an assistant director, shooting films with Bigas Luna and Agustín Villaronga among others. Later she traveled to the United States, to ubtain a Masters degree in Film Directing from the prestigious A.F.I. Institute in Los Angeles. Upon returning to Europe she directed her first feature film, “Rain in His Shoes,” with Penelope Cruz, which sold to over 35 countries and earning several awards. Then she directed “Tortilla Soup”, “Utopia” and “Your Life in 65 Minutes.”
